'ROUND THE ROCKS with Hoyt

Perhaps one of the secrets to Steve and Connie Segner's outstanding success is the fact that these creators and owners of El Portal also are hands-on helpers who do anything and everything to serve their guests. The hospitality displayed by the Segners so captivated Andrew Harper, publisher of Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report, their new inn has been named a 2004 Grand Award winner in the report's 25th Annual Hotel of the Year competition.

In the spring edition of this magazine, "Rocks" briefly reported that Steve and Connie Segner's new El Portal had been honored by Andrew Harper, editor and publisher of highly respected Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report.

Subsequently, additional information revealed that El Portal was a 2004 Grand Award winner in the report's 25th Annual Hotel of the Year competition.

Furthermore, this intriguing inn is one of only eight hotels nationwide and 16 worldwide to receive Harper's award - and it is the only such property located in Arizona.

According to Hideaway Report, to be considered, a property must be "relatively intimate in size and be located in peaceful and scenically pleasing surroundings."

Subsequently, properties are judged on all-around comfort, non-commercial character and passionate commitment to personal service.

Ultimately, however, Harper relies on "the intangible summary impression that instinctively separates the good from the truly enchanting."
Accordingly, El Portal has continually garnered architectural and luxury-inn awards, as well as exceptional recognition by the media, tourism industry and travel organizations.
"Hats off!" to you, Steve and Connie.
