A stay at Hotel El Portal Sedona places you in the heart of one of the most beautiful destinations in the Southwest—but beyond majestic red rock views and world-class hiking, our neighborhood is home to another Sedona treasure. Just a short stroll from our boutique hotel, you’ll find the internationally renowned Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village, one of the most iconic places to shop, dine, and relax in Sedona.

A Timeless Sedona Landmark

Pronounced T-la-keh-pah-keh, Tlaquepaque has been a Sedona gem since the 1970s, envisioned as a living arts village where creativity and beauty are part of everyday life. Founder Abe Miller fell in love with the lush sycamore grove that once stood on this site, inspiring him to build a destination that felt like it had been here for centuries.

Tlaquepaque—meaning “best of everything” in the ancient Nahuatl language—is authentically modeled after a traditional Mexican village, complete with vine-covered stucco walls, cobblestone walkways, arched entryways and other enchanting details. As you wander, it’s easy to imagine that you’ve stepped into a historic village plaza in Old Mexico—a place where people gather, stroll, shop, dine, and savor time together.

Art Around Every Corner

Originally conceived as a community where artists could create in view of visitors, Tlaquepaque remains one of Arizona’s most inspiring art destinations. Today, more than 50 galleries and specialty shops showcase works across every imaginable medium, including:

Bronze and stone sculpture

Traditional and contemporary paintings

Glass art

Handwoven textiles

Fine jewelry

Architectural décor

Southwestern and Native American art

It’s not uncommon to see an artist sculpting or painting right in their gallery. At Tlaquepaque, creative expression is not just on display—it’s alive and happening every day.

A Feast for the Senses

Even a simple stroll through Tlaquepaque is a sensory experience. You’ll hear splashing fountains, feel cool shade beneath sycamore trees, admire vibrant gardens bursting with seasonal flowers, and smell fresh bread, grilled specialties, and savory dishes wafting from nearby restaurants.

If hunger strikes, there’s no need to go elsewhere. Tlaquepaque is home to several beloved dining destinations, including:

El Rincon Restaurante Mexicano, serving Arizona-style classics and margaritas for over 38 years

René at Tlaquepaque, an elegant fine dining experience with French-inspired cuisine and an award-winning wine list

Oak Creek Brewery & Grill, where local brews and hearty dishes pair perfectly after a day of exploring

Secret Garden Café, a favorite breakfast and lunch spot surrounded by lush greenery

Whether you’re craving romantic fine dining, casual bites, or handcrafted local brews, there’s something to please every palate.

Celebrations, Festivals, and Community Spirit

Tlaquepaque is more than a shopping hub—it’s a vibrant community gathering place. Throughout the year, its iconic plazas host an array of events, including art shows, cultural festivals, holiday celebrations, live music and more.

One of the most anticipated traditions is the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, held each year in early December. This festive celebration features local entertainment, refreshments, and a visit from Santa to welcome the holiday season.

Even weddings take on a magical quality here. The charming Tlaquepaque Chapel, designed as a quiet space for contemplation, has become one of the area’s most beautiful and sought-after venues for wedding ceremonies and receptions.

Steps from Your Suite at El Portal

As a guest of El Portal, you’ll enjoy easy access to all that Tlaquepaque has to offer. Leave your car parked and begin your day with a leisurely stroll beneath the sycamores. Browse galleries in the morning, stop back later for lunch or a glass of wine, return in the evening for live music, and discover something new every time.

El Portal is also proudly pet-friendly, so feel free to bring your dog along as you explore the cobblestone paths, shaded plazas, and charming courtyards of Tlaquepaque. Many of the restaurants welcome pets on their patios, enabling you to enjoy the scenery and delicious cuisine with your four-legged friend by your side.

If you’re looking for a stay that blends natural beauty, walkability, authentic Sedona culture, and personalized luxury, Hotel El Portal Sedona offers the perfect home base. Call us today at 800-313-0017 to book!

Here’s What to Know About Exploring on Foot

While Sedona is renowned for its vast network of hiking trails, many visitors wonder if the city itself is walkable. Located in the heart of Sedona’s vibrant arts district, our pet-friendly boutique hotel places you within easy walking distance of some of the city’s most beloved spots.

Walkable Wonders at Your Doorstep

Just steps from our front door, you’ll find Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village—an enchanting plaza filled with galleries, artisan shops, and restaurants. With cobblestone paths, flowering courtyards, and the soothing sounds of fountains, it’s one of Sedona’s most peaceful and picturesque places to wander.

By walking approximately 15-20 minutes from El Portal, you’ll reach other hubs that are easily explored on foot, such as the Hillside Sedona plaza and Uptown Sedona district. Bustling with a vibrant array of eateries, local art galleries, and specialty boutiques—all set against the backdrop of stunning red rock vistas—Uptown is a particularly popular destination for visitors.

For Walkers Who Love Nature

In addition to strolling within town, Sedona offers several easy, scenic walking trails perfect for those who want to stretch their legs without embarking on a strenuous hike. Some local favorites include:

Marg’s Draw Trail – A relatively flat trail with beautiful views and a peaceful setting, located just a short drive or bike ride from El Portal.

Posse Grounds Park – This community park has paved walking paths, open space, and benches where you can take in the views or enjoy a picnic.

These spots are ideal for travelers seeking low-impact ways to get some exercise while enjoying Sedona’s natural beauty.

Ride the Sedona Shuttle

If you’re planning to visit Sedona without a car, standard transportation options like Uber and Lyft are readily available—but the city also offers a wonderful, eco-friendly shuttle service that can help you explore the area for free or at minimal cost:

Sedona Shuttle – this free shuttle carries visitors to five popular trailheads year-round, Thursday-Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. No reservations are needed!

Sedona Shuttle Connect – this on-demand, app-based public transit service is available Thursday-Sunday, 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., for just $2 per ride.

Verde Shuttle – visit the nearby town of Cottonwood from Sedona with this hop-on-hop-off bus service that runs hourly, seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

If you’re staying at El Portal, it’s easy to incorporate the shuttle into your plans. Simply walk or drive to one of the designated park-and-ride lots, hop on the shuttle, and let it whisk you away to your next adventure—no parking stress required!

With idyllic weather, a vibrant tapestry of fall foliage throughout the Verde Valley, and a full calendar of festivals and events, autumn is one of the best times of year to visit Sedona. Since many visitors are drawn to the area during the fall, however, it’s important to start planning your trip well in advance. Here are some popular attractions to consider adding to your itinerary:

Hit the Trails

At any time of year, Sedona is a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts—but the moderate temperatures of autumn make it the perfect time to explore the area’s many trails. Options that are particularly popular during the fall months include the West Fork Trail along Oak Creek, the relatively flat and easy Huckaby Trail, and Casner Canyon Trail, which crosses Oak Creek (so be prepared to get your feet wet!). Check out our resources to start planning your expeditions, and as always, remember to hike with plenty of water, sunscreen, and a camera to capture the breathtaking vistas.

Enjoy the Fall Foliage

One of the most enchanting features of the Verde Valley in the fall is the changing leaves, as the region comes alive with shades of gold, orange, and crimson. Sedona’s Oak Creek Canyon is a must-visit spot for leaf peeping; take a scenic drive along State Route 89A, where you’ll be surrounded by vibrant foliage. Another wonderful option is the Fall Colors Tour from the Verde Canyon Railroad, which transports passengers along the Verde River and through the colorful canyon corridor from the comfort of a renovated vintage train.

The charming mountain town of Flagstaff, located approximately 45 minutes north of Sedona, is also a top leaf-peeping destination, with its forests of golden aspens and ruby red oaks. At https://www.flagstaffarizona.org/plan-your-trip/leafometer/, the city offers a LEAF-ometer with the latest status of the changing fall colors around Flagstaff, as well as suggested spots and activities where visitors can enjoy the full glory of the season.

Explore the Arts and Culture Scene

In addition to its natural beauty, Sedona has established itself as a world-class hub of arts and culture. Explore a diverse selection of galleries throughout Uptown Sedona and the enchanting Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village, which is located just steps from El Portal. Fall is also a wonderful time for festivals, with the annual Sedona Arts Festival taking place over the weekend of October 12-13, 2024 and the Sedona Plein Air Festival October 18-26.

Wine Tasting in the Verde Valley

As a federally recognized American Viticultural Area (AVA), the Verde Valley is home to a burgeoning wine scene. Fall is a fantastic time to visit local vineyards and wineries, as the harvest season brings exciting events and activities. Explore the Verde Valley Wine Trail to sample award-winning wines amidst beautiful settings, traverse the Verde River with a world-famous “Water to Wine” tour from Sedona Adventure Tours, or spend a relaxing afternoon at the Sedona Winefest on September 28-29.

Admire the Night Skies

Recognized as an International Dark Sky Community, Sedona is an excellent destination for stargazing, particularly during the crisp, clear nights of fall. Consider taking a stargazing tour, or simply find a quiet spot away from the city lights to enjoy the celestial display. You might even catch a glimpse of the Milky Way!

Whether you’re seeking an activity-packed schedule or you just want to enjoy some rest and relaxation against the breathtaking backdrop of the red rocks, fall is a magical time to visit Sedona. At El Portal, we are eager to welcome you (and your pets!) to our luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Sedona. Through our personalized concierge services, we can help you create an itinerary for your visit tailored to your schedule and interests.
While much of Arizona sizzles with triple-digit temperatures during the summer months, Sedona beckons with pleasantly warm, sunny days and refreshingly cool nights under star-filled skies. Located just two hours north of Phoenix, summer visitors to Sedona will enjoy fewer crowds, some of the lowest hotel rates of the year, and the striking red rock landscapes that make the city an enchanting destination in any season.

If you’re considering a trip to Sedona this summer, here are a few of the most popular highlights at this time of year:

Refreshing Adventures at Slide Rock State Park and Grasshopper Point

Embrace the spirit of summer with a visit to Slide Rock State Park, where the cool waters of Oak Creek Canyon carve a natural water slide amidst tree-lined, red rock cliffs. Visitors of all ages will savor the thrill of sliding down smooth rock formations into crystal-clear pools—a refreshing respite from the desert heat.

For a more secluded escape, venture a few miles from Slide Rock to Grasshopper Point, a picturesque, 50-foot-wide swimming hole framed by terraced cliffs and shaded by lush vegetation. Grasshopper Point offers a serene setting for swimming, picnicking, and hiking, with three popular trails (Allen’s Bend, Casner Canyon Trail, and Huckaby Trail) accessible from the parking lot. If you choose to hike during the summer months, consider starting out early in the morning when the temperatures are cooler, and be sure to pack plenty of water!

Indulge Your Adventurous Side with Thrilling Sightseeing Options

While hiking and mountain biking are among the most popular ways to experience Sedona’s magnificent landscapes, other options include jeep tours, helicopter/airplane tours, and treks on the Verde Canyon Railroad.

With several local companies that provide jeep tours, these exhilarating off-road adventures transport passengers to Sedona’s hidden gems and panoramic viewpoints that are inaccessible by most passenger vehicles. As you traverse the rugged trails, knowledgeable guides will share captivating tales of Sedona’s rich history and geology, providing a deeper appreciation for this majestic area.

For an even more thrilling experience, consider a helicopter or airplane tour to experience red rock country from a birds-eye view. Most local tour providers offer options that not only fly over Sedona, but incredible destinations like Antelope Canyon and the Grand Canyon as well.

A more relaxing way to experience the beauty of Sedona and the greater Verde Valley is with a ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad, which departs from Clarkdale, approximately 30 minutes from Sedona. This renovated vintage locomotive traverses the Verde Canyon, which features towering red rock walls and an impressive display of flora and fauna. The Railroad hosts special events during the summer months, including wine tastings and moonlight rides.

Daytrip to Flagstaff for a Cool Mountain Escape

Located just 45 minutes north of Sedona, the charming mountain town of Flagstaff boasts some of the coolest temperatures in Arizona and a plethora of activities, from exploring the historic downtown to hiking amidst the scenic ponderosa pine and aspen tree forests. Flagstaff is also home to attractions such as Lowell Observatory (an astronomical observatory open to the public for a variety of tours and experiences), Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, and Wupatki National Monument.

Visit a state park. Another wonderful way to immerse yourself in Sedona’s natural beauty is by visiting one of the area’s state parks. Located amidst the tree-lined cliffs of Oak Creek Canyon, Slide Rock State Park beckons with its refreshing natural water slides and historic apple orchards, while nearby Red Rock State Park provides a serene backdrop for birdwatching and leisurely picnics. If you’re willing to venture further afield, the majesty of Grand Canyon National Park is less than two hours away!

Enjoy a round of golf. If you’re seeking a more relaxed outdoor activity, the mild temperatures and clear skies of springtime create an idyllic setting for teeing off against the stunning backdrop of red rock formations. Numerous golf courses in the area cater to all skill levels.

Experience a refreshing adventure on the Verde River. While kayaking and other water-based adventures might not be the first activities that come to mind when you think of the desert, the Sedona area’s Verde River features refreshing waters and banks lined with lush vegetation. For instance, our friends at Sedona Adventures offer several different tour options for all interests, including popular “Water to Wine” Tours that will transport you to some of the Verde Valley’s fabulous vineyards!

When considering top spots for wine growing, Arizona may not be the first place that comes to mind. However, with a climate comparable to Mediterranean wine regions, Arizona’s Verde Valley has been producing quality wines that have led oenophiles across the country to take notice. As one of the state’s three wine regions (in addition to Sonoita and Wilcox), the Verde Valley reached a key milestone in November 2021, when it became a federally recognized American Viticultural Area (AVA). As the region continues to enjoy significant growth, now is an exciting time to explore the wonderful wineries of the Verde Valley.

What makes the Verde Valley ripe for wine growing?

Consisting of the cities of Sedona, Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Camp Verde, Jerome, and Cornville, the Verde Valley sits at a relatively high elevation averaging nearly 4,000 feet. With mild winters and summers that are characterized by hot days, cool nights, and adequate rainfall, the region’s climate is conducive to growing wine grapes. Dark, thick-skinned grapes sprout from the volcanic soils, which contain layers of sedimentary rock known as caliche. Rich in calcium, caliche is believed to add a minerality to the wines.

Experiencing the wines of the Verde Valley

Although the Verde Valley is Arizona’s newest AVA, it is already the most prolific, with over 20 wineries and tasting rooms—and Sedona serves as the perfect base for visiting all of them. Various wine tour companies based in Sedona, including Wine Tours of Sedona and Sip Sedona, will transport you directly to the best local vineyards, with tour options available to suit different groups and interests. These companies provide a great way to safely explore Verde Valley wine country without needing to worry about a designated driver, while also offering a chance to gain expert, local insight into the unique characteristics of the region and each winery that you visit.

If you’d prefer to do some independent exploration, Verde Valley Wine Trail offers a downloadable map of all area wineries. You can also download a passport to keep track of the wineries you visit, and upload a stamped version to be entered in a quarterly drawing!

If you’re seeking to explore our up-and-coming wine region and everything else the Verde Valley has to offer, El Portal Sedona Hotel is the ideal “home away from home.” Located in the heart of Sedona, our 12 spacious suites offer a tranquil respite after a day of wine tasting. Call us at 800-313-0017 or visit https://elportalsedona.com to book your stay!

For this month’s blog, we welcome guest blogger Andrea Christelle of Sedona Philosophy!

Sometimes you just have to take the dog with you. That’s the way I felt 15 years ago when my good friend was getting married at Sam A. Baker State Park in Missouri. It wasn’t that I had to take my dog to the wedding. I didn’t have a dog. I found a lost dog at the wedding, and he needed a home!

At the park, all of the cabins and campsites were filled up with friends new and old. It was a weekend of outdoor immersion, before the wedding party and a sizable entourage headed off to Burning Man. It was a wonderfully chaotic mix of people and parties, but eventually, it became clear that amidst the merry madness, there was a dog without an owner.

A black lab mutt with the sweetest disposition kept sidling up to people looking for affection. And food. When I heard the rumor that this dog had been left behind, and that the park managers were planning to take it to the pound I was really upset. That could not happen. Not to this kind creature. I made a decision and a proclamation. I would take the dog back to New Orleans.

I hadn’t had a pet since I was a kid, so I didn’t know that you can’t just put a dog on a plane like a suitcase. Animals need shots, and papers, and more than just carriers. But once I made it clear that the dog would have a home, others stepped up to the plate.

The newlyweds decided to expand their family right away. They adopted this lovable dog, which remained a loyal companion for all of its days. They named him Sam A. Baker, to commemorate the place they found the pup and tied the knot.

Like a lot of things in my life, making sure that the dog had a home didn’t turn out the way I thought it would, but it probably turned out for the best. In this case, the best thing was Sam staying with Kelly and Michael.

We know that many of you are choosing El Portal Sedona Hotel not only for its charm and elegance but also because it is pet friendly. Now you can take a guided hike that is pet friendly too.
