The Story of El Portal and Our East Portrait Wall

Welcome to El Portal Sedona, a boutique hotel that transcends its 12 rooms to become a personal journey through time and artistry. As the owners of El Portal, my wife, Connie Segner, and I, have poured our hearts into this homage to the grand homes of the early 20th century. Our collection of Arts-and-Crafts furnishings, lamps, and carefully curated art is not just a display, but a reflection of our deep passion for history and art.

For me, this passion is a hobby and a lifelong love that began at a young age. When I was about 12 years old, my parents took our family to Pismo Beach, California. Just up the road was the world-famous Hearst Castle, the opulent home of newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst, famously depicted in “Citizen Kane.” Hearst, who scoured Europe after World War I, brought back thousands of pieces of art, furniture, and sculptures. The experience of visiting his castle was far more captivating than any museum I had encountered.

At El Portal and our adjacent home, “The Greenhouse,” Connie and I have crafted our version of a turn-of-the-century hotel and gallery, albeit on a smaller scale. We began by collecting essential furniture—pieces to sit on and tables to gather around. Over the years, our collection evolved to include lamps, fine pictures, portraits, and decorative art that resonate with the charm of the Arts-and-Crafts movement.

One of the most cherished treasures at El Portal is our East portrait wall. This unique feature is a tribute to the women who have shaped Sedona’s history. Each portrait is a piece of art and a window into the past, telling a story of grace and strength. Our focus was not on famous artists or expensive works, but rather on capturing the essence of real people through realism.

Visitors often ask why we chose to showcase women on this wall. My response is akin to why anyone collects watches or cars—collecting is a deeply personal endeavor. For us, it’s a way of sharing our stories and passions.

El Portal is more than just a hotel; it serves as a place that celebrates art, history, and community. We warmly invite you to experience this unique blend during your stay. Welcome to our world at El Portal!
