Checking out hotels, bed and breakfasts, and luxury inns for your Sedona Arizona vacation? TripAdvisor has a few reviews on El Portal, a Sedona hotel…
I BLED over the decision as to where to stay in Sedona since to me that is a huge part of the total vacation experience – we wanted something with both luxury and charm – we were not looking for spas and pools and such that you might find it a traditional resort, more looking for true southwestern flavor but definitely looking to stay upscale still.
We found that in spades here – we started off in the Presidential Room (#12) and moved to #6 based upon availability when we booked, and loved both rooms for different reasons and in hindsight glad we tried both. #12 was huge and with a great view, #6 was ground level and private with a patio. (I love the tubs in both rooms!!!)
The architecture and attention to detail was exceptional, the grounds are well tended, loved the outdoor fireplace and since the fridge in the common area was well stocked I had no need to stock the one in the room – wine etc. always available by the glass, honor system….
Steve was tremendously helpful, as were Fran and Terry. Very warm, very personal, also met some great dogs. :)
Location could not have been better, steps away from shopping & bars, etc….
We made the right decision, no question, and would recommend in a heartbeat! (Joanne01, MA)
Feels more like a home than a hotel. Each room is entirely different. The common area garden invites guests to mingle with each other as well as the large common area gathering space where they will stoke a fire for you for ‘smores if you want. I had a fireplace in each room I stayed in (room 1 and room 8). The owners and staff are VERY accomodating and willing to help you explore Sedona. Take the jeep tour directly from the hotel’s private jeep…..it’s worth it. This is a place to enjoy your time while at the hotel. I found myself WANTING to hang out and relax there as much as I explored. It was refreshing. Regenerating.
Food for thought about Room 1 – it is directly off the common area where breakfast in the morn…if you’re not an early riser, the smell of food wafting in and chatter of people MAY wake you. Bonus though – it has a private walk out patio through french doors. Great if you have a pet or wheelchair.
Room 8 – Amazing rustic natural features. No private patio. It’s entrance is a door off the common garden area, but it’s windows face the small parking lot of the hotel. I found an odd humming vibration type noise during my one night in this room. Since I only stayed one night it was tolerable. Otherwise I would ask about this. (SLC80, USA)
El Portal is a gorgeous inn nestled behind the Tlaquepaque arts plaza in Sedona. A rose-covered archway leads you into a sunny courtyard lawn. The first floor rooms all open out into the courtyard, where several chairs, twinkling lights strung overhead, and a fire kettle make for wonderful nighttime wine drinking and conversation. The main room (lobby, registration desk, restaurant) features high beamed ceilings made with reclaimed wood and is decorated with Craftsman furniture collected by the owner. Each of the rooms is also furnished in the same style and each is unique. Steve, the owner, gladly provides excellent hiking and sightseeing recommendations. Several restaurants are within walking distance. Daily evening wine and cheese are set out in the main room (cheese and snacks are gratis; wine is paid by the glass using an honor system sign-up sheet). Dogs are welcome here — we saw three dog guests during our two day stay.
