What to Consider When Traveling with Pets

Traveling with your pets can be a wonderful experience that creates lasting memories and deepens your bond with your animal companions. However, it requires careful planning and preparation to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip for your pets and your family, as well as for other travelers you may encounter.

As a pet-friendly hotel that strives to provide an outstanding experience for both our human and animal guests, El Portal Sedona Hotel understands the various considerations that may arise when traveling with pets. Here are some key factors to keep in mind:

Health and Safety

Before embarking on your journey, make sure that your pet is in good health. You may want to schedule a vet visit to ensure vaccinations are up to date and to get a copy of your pet’s medical records. This is crucial in case of emergencies, and some hotels, airlines, or destinations may require proof of vaccinations. Additionally, carry a pet first-aid kit with essentials like bandages, pet-safe antimicrobial wipes, and any medications that may be needed.

Comfort and Familiarity

Traveling can be stressful or even frightening for pets, particularly if they’re not accustomed to it. To create a sense of familiarity in new environments, it may be helpful to bring along your pet’s favorite toys, blankets, bed and/or carrier. These items can help your furry friend feel more at ease, thereby reducing anxiety and making your stay more enjoyable for all.

Travel Essentials

In addition to the items above, be sure to pack a travel bag for your pet with the items they regularly need, such as their food, bowls, leash, waste bags, and grooming supplies. Having an adequate supply of your pet’s regular food may help avoid digestive issues caused by sudden changes in diet. Consider using portable water and food dishes, which are lighter to pack and easily transportable for outings.

Accommodations and Amenities

When traveling with your pets, one of the most important decisions is where to stay. Choosing a hotel or other accommodation that is truly pet friendly—and not just pet tolerant—can ensure a more comfortable experience, so be sure to ask about any fees, restrictions, or policies related to bringing your pet.

At El Portal, not only do we accept pets, but our hotel was actually built with pets in mind. You’ll find wood and tile flooring throughout our property, as well as over 1,000 square feet of dog-friendly patio areas. Unlike most other hotels that label themselves as pet friendly, we do not charge any pet fees. Our animal guests also receive a welcome basket upon arrival containing a blanket, doggie bags, and treats! If you’d like a bit more space and privacy, we also offer three pet-friendly vacation rental properties in the heart of Sedona: Connie’s PlaceSarah’s Place, and Terrapin Station.

Local Pet Services

Research the availability of pet services at your destination, such as veterinarians, pet stores, and pet sitters or boarding facilities. Having locations and contact information for these services can be a lifesaver in the event of an emergency or other unforeseen need. At El Portal, our team is always happy to provide recommendations for our guests in Sedona.

Pet-Friendly Activities

One of the main joys of traveling with your pet is exploring new places together. Before your trip, be sure to research pet-friendly activities at your destination, such as restaurants with pet-friendly patios and outdoor recreational activities. Here in Sedona, we are fortunate to have an abundance of activities that can be enjoyed with pets. From hiking trails and parks amidst the gorgeous red rocks to walkable shopping districts with pet-friendly restaurants, you and your four-legged companions will find plenty to explore.

Transportation

Consider the mode of transportation you’re planning to take and how it may affect your pet. If you’re driving, ensure that your pet is safely secured in a crate or with a pet seatbelt, and make regular stops for bathroom breaks and exercise. If you’re flying, check the airline’s pet policies in advance, including any carrier and health documentation requirements. If possible, choose direct flights to minimize stress on your pet.

Hotel Etiquette

Being a responsible pet owner is key to maintaining a pet-friendly environment at hotels like El Portal. This includes steps like always cleaning up after your pet and respecting the hotel’s property and other guests. Do not leave your pet unattended in the room, as this can cause them anxiety and potentially disturb other guests (and, as is the case at El Portal, may be against the hotel’s policy). When you leave the hotel, plan to either bring your pet with you or arrange for a boarding/daycare or pet-sitting service.

Training and Behavior

If your pet is well-behaved and accustomed to different environments, traveling with them will be far easier and less stressful. Therefore, try taking them to various places—such as pet-friendly restaurants and parks—close to home before planning a trip, and practice basic training commands such as sit, stay, and quiet. If your pet tends to be anxious or reactive, consider using calming aids or consulting a professional trainer before your trip.
